Are you feeling overwhelmed, consumed with worry, thoughts that you can't seem to dismiss? Are you having difficulty connecting with your baby or not feeling as happy as you thought you would be?
New motherhood brings a range of thoughts, feelings, and experiences. While the journey often times comes with excitment and joy, it can also bring challenges, anxiety, and stress. The life changing event of having a baby and parenting come chock full of intense emotions.
So if you have come here today because you are worried about how you are feeling and you haven't felt like yourself for at least two weeks, please know that the disruptions that you are experiencing are common and support and treatment are available.
We are often taught that having a baby is one of the most exciting times in a woman's life. While ignoring the fact that this life stage is riddled with stress and anxiety. In fact, Postpartum Depression is the most common complication of childbirth, but it's commonly overlooked.
Although many women experience the "baby blues", approximately 1 in 7 women are affected by a perinatal mental health complication such as postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and other syndromes. The term that now encompasses all of these conditions is called Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. Simply put, "perinatal" means having to do with pregnancy.
The cause of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders is not yet fully understood, however we do know that certain risk factors are at play. For instance, the rapid shift in hormones during and after pregnancy, nutritional deficiencies, lack of sleep, birth trauma, financial strain, lack of support, tension in relationships, unstable living environment, unresolved grief, medical issues, etc., all can contribute to the development of the above conditions. The rate of mood disorders during the child bearing years is extremely high and it not only impacts women, but their loved ones well.
Alliance Therapy Practice is here to help women create their village and reaching out for help is the first step in that process. With specialized training in Maternal Mental Health, through Postpartum Support International and Seleni Institute, we help women before, during and after pregnancy to recover from mood disorders and cope with the difficult transitions often associated with this major life stage. Our work will entail assessing risk factors, identifying symptoms and developing a plan for coping.
A good place to start is reviewing this questionnaire to facilitate a discussion with a healthcare professional about some of the symptoms you may be experiencing.
Then, let's get to work today to find how you can begin to experience all the joys that this unique time in your life has to offer.
In addition to individual psychotherapy, group therapy is another way to receive support, acceptance, and validation along your journey. We now offer two distinct options to meet your needs.
